Left Handed Grants

Left Handed Grants

Being left handed can be tough. It seems like nothing was made for left handed people, and in general lefties tend to get a bad rap. When it comes to grants however, lefties have just as much opportunity as righties! Read on below to see what lefties are entitled to, as well as an awesome left-handed scholarship opportunity!

It’s Rare

It is rare to be left handed. Only 1 in 10 people are left handed, although it tends to be a little more common in men than women. There are some genetic probabilities of having left handed children.

  • Two right handed people have about a 9.5 percent chance of having a left-handed baby.
  • Mixed parents see that number double, to about a 19% chance of having a southpaw
  • If both parents are left handed, there is a 27 percent chance of them having a left-handed baby. Considering only 10% of the population is left handed, that is quite a high percentage!

The Downsides

The downsides of being left handed go way beyond trying to find a pair of functioning scissors! In a study done by Oxford University, it was found that the gene that makes left handed people more common is the same gene that carriers an increased risk of schizophrenia. Also, it has been studied that left-handed women are more likely to get cancers and strokes. It doesn’t stop there. These are all the chronic ailments that seem to have some sort of association with left handed people.

  • Migraines
  • Alcoholism
  • Dyslexia
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Asthma, and more.

The Perks

Right now, you are probably thinking, why would I ever want to be left handed? Well, you can apply to ALL the same grants a right-handed person can. But, there is even more you are eligible for.

The grant named the Frederick and Mary T. Beckley Scholarship for Left Handed Students is available for certain students, all of which MUST be left handed. The student is awarded $1,000 based on who meets the criteria. Unfortunately, this grant is only for students attending Junita College in Pennsylvania. To apply, a left-handed student can go to Junita.com and search, “left handed scholarship.”

Being left handed can be hard. Power tools, smeared ink, and backwards scissors are just to name a few. But, not all is lost as a lefty. You can apply to every federal loan, scholarship, and grants regardless of your writing hand. There has never been a better time to be a lefty!
